Boring is one of the basic operation we use the lathe machine for. Boring is necessary in many cases to produce accurate holes. Drilled holes are seldom straight due to imperfections in the material which cause drills to move out of alignment. Therefore, where accuracy is important, drilled holes are usually made undersize and then bored or reamed to the proper dimensions. Boring is also useful in truing large holes in flat material. In this case, the hole is cut undersize using a bandsaw or trepanning tool and is trued to proper dimensions by boring. What does the boring operation involves?

Engineering Workshop Practice – The Lathe Machine Operations - Drilling 2
The lathe machine is famed for its numerous workshop uses, which include the drilling operation. The lathe can perform this task of drilling owing to the alignment between its headstock and tail-stock. This perfect alignment enables you to drill holes that are precisely centered in a cylindrical piece of stock. This article discusses on step by step drilling operation using the lathe and the intricacies.

Automobile Transmission System (Part 2) - Types Of Transmission Drives And How They Function
In a car, power is transmitted from the engine through the clutch and the gearbox to the axle by means of a tubular propeller shaft. in the case of a front wheel drive the axle that receives power via the propeller shaft is the rear axle.

Automobile Transmission System (Part 1) - Types And Operations
The transmission system refers to the mechanism that transmits the power developed by the engine to the wheels of an automobile in the form of kinetic energy. A basic transmission system comprises of various transmission components such as gears, shafts and other parts, which function together to enable the movement of an automobile.
Often, a transmission has multiple gear ratios (or simply "gears"), with the ability to switch between them to speed varies. This switching may be done

Mechanical Governors - Working Principle, Types And Function
Most engine-powered applications, from lawn mowers to tractors to standby power systems, even your cars must be controlled, automatically, by a “governor” . The governor system is like a cruse control system. It keeps the engine running at the speed you select, regardless of changes in the load. Since there is always a continuous load change as time passes with frequency and suddenness that would require the full attention of-and probably overwhelm- a human operator, the governor handles the load change.

Engineering Workshop Practice - Lathe Machine Operation - Drilling
Although the lathe is not a drilling machine, but frequently, holes will need to be drilled on work piece before other internal operations can be completed, such as boring, reaming, and tapping. Thus, time and effort are saved by using the lathe for drilling operations instead of changing the work to another machine.
In this article, we shall be discussing the following

Enginnering Workshop Practice - The Engine Lathe - Parts, Accessories And Maintenance
There are different types of lathes installed in the machine shops in various industries. These include the engine lathe, the horizontal turret lathe, and several variations of the basic engine lathe, such as bench, toolroom, and gap lathes. All lathes, except the vertical turret type, have one thing in common. For all usual machining operations, the workpiece is held and rotated about a horizontal axis, while being formed to size and shape by a cutting tool. In the vertical turret lathe, the workpiece is rotated about a vertical axis. Of the various types of lathes, the type you are most likely to use is the engine lathe. Therefore, this chapter deals only with engine lathes and the machining operations you may have to perform.

Engineering Material Series - Solid Shaft Or Hollow Shafts - Which Is Stronger?
What seem better by sight may not really be better in the real sense. Many people may say that solid shaft are better than their hollow counterpart. However, we can not just judge by sight. It is technically proven that hollow shaft are better. Better? you may ask. Yes better. How?
To prove this we have to compare the shaft bending stress developed for the same applied bending moment to the hollow shaft and solid shaft of the same weight.
